Project Overview
Hypertec recently provided a specialized mini rotary drilling rig for a challenging urban redevelopment project in a densely populated metropolitan area. The client, a local construction firm, was tasked with constructing a new underground parking facility and an extension for an existing 5-story residential building. The project site was extremely restricted, surrounded by historical buildings and narrow alleyways measuring less than 3 meters wide.
The Challenge
The primary obstacle for this project was access. Standard crawler drilling rigs were too large to enter the site without demolishing surrounding walls, which was not permitted by local heritage regulations. The geotechnical report indicated a need for 12-meter deep piles with a diameter of 500mm to reach stable bedrock through mixed layers of fill and clay. The contractor required a machine that could deliver high torque in a compact package.
The Solution: Hypertec Mini Rotary Drilling Rig
We recommended our flagship compact rotary drilling rig, specifically designed for tight-access construction sites. The unit was transported in easily manageable components and reassembled on-site in under 4 hours.
Key Equipment Features Utilized:
- Ultra-Compact Design: A transport width of less than 2 meters allowed the rig to navigate the narrow city streets and pass through standard gate openings.
- Powerful Rotary Head: Despite its small size, the rig delivered a robust torque output (up to 35 kNm) and variable rotation speed (7-40 rpm), enabling efficient drilling through tough soil layers.
- Versatile Mast System: Featuring adjustable lateral tilt (15°), forward tilt (10°), and backward tilt (15°), allowing the operator to drill piles at precise angles and positions close to existing structures.
- Integrated Winch System: A 45kN main winch with a lifting speed of 60m/min ensured fast and safe Kelly bar handling.
Execution and Performance
De mini piling rig operated efficiently for three weeks. Its rubber tracks minimized damage to the existing pavement, a critical requirement for the city council. The machine’s advanced hydraulic system, powered by a reliable Isuzu engine, provided consistent performance even during continuous operation.
Project Results:
- Zero Site Damage: The lightweight nature (approx. 9.3 tons) and rubber tracks prevented surface cracking.
- High Precision: The adjustable mast ensured verticality tolerance was met within 0.5%, critical for the structural integrity of the new extension.
- Speed: The project was completed 3 days ahead of schedule due to the rig’s rapid mobilization and efficient drilling cycle.
Client Feedback
*“We were skeptical about using a small rotary drilling rig for such a demanding load-bearing project, but APIE’s machine exceeded our expectations. It fit into our yard where no other machine could, and it drilled through the clay layers as fast as the larger rigs we use on open sites.”*
